Asked by: Sudhakar I currently drive a Hyundai Grand i10 (manual, petrol) and want to buy a new automatic petrol SUV within a ₹15 lakh budget. My priorities are safety, rear-seat space and boot capacity. I prefer models such as the Tata Sierra, Curv, Nexon, Venue N Line and Kia cars. My usage is mostly city driving, with highway trips once every three months. Please suggest the right car. Since you already drive a Hyundai car, it's best to stick with the brand, and in your budget, the new Hyundai Venue makes sense. It's the latest car in its segment, and as such, offers the newest tech and features. While it hasn't been crash tested yet, it uses a new-gen platform and features plenty of safety kit, so we expect it to perform. Its rear seat and boot are both pretty spacious for the class, and if you choose the N Line variant, as you prefer, you'll get some sporty design elements as well. The Tata Sierra and new Kia Seltos would have been better options for your requirements, but sadly, automatic versions of those cars will be outside of your budget.

The most logical option for you would be to upgrade to the current Ertiga, which is a generation ahead of the one you currently have.The current Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is more spacious than your model and comes with a smooth 6-speed automatic too. However, there is no diesel option available like in the previous generation Ertiga that you own. So if you are looking for an MPV with the low running cost of diesel, the next best option, if you have the budget, is the Kia Carens Clavis diesel. It comes with a 1.5 diesel automatic, coupled to a smooth-shifting six-speed auto transmission.

Since you are familiar with the brand and your dealer, who might give you a good exchange offer. We suggest you consider the new Hyundai Venue, which drives well and is well-equipped too. The Venue HX8 variant with the 1.0 litre turbo and DCT auto will suit most of your needs.

Please suggest some good options to consider. I had the Tata Altroz diesel and Kia Sonet diesel in mind. Given your requirements, we would recommend you opt for the Kia Sonet diesel. The car will likely be more reliable, and the Kia diesel engine delivers a good mix of refinement and performance. It's also very well equipped and, with the SUV body style, will give you a better view of the road outside. Do bear in mind, though, that the rear seat space is quite limited, so we would suggest you personally check to see if this is ok with you.

Given your monthly travel is just 200-300km, we will give less weightage to fuel economy and more weightage to driving comfort. Asked by: Aditya I am planning to buy a new Kia Seltos but am confused between the IVT and DCT transmissions. Considering heavy Bangalore traffic and occasional long drives, which transmission would you recommend? The New Kia Seltos with the IVT gearbox is a better option for you. The IVT is a very smooth transmission and provides jerk-free gearshifts, which you will really appreciate in city driving. Kia's IVT also works well on highway drives and doesn't have that 'rubberband effect' (sharp rise in revs without a corresponding rise in road speed) that other CVT gearboxes are notorious for.  The DCT gearbox is quicker shifting and also comes paired to a more powerful engine. On the flip side, gearshifts on the DCT are not as smooth as the IVT in slow-speed driving scenarios.

Please suggest suitable options. You can consider the Skoda Kylaq. Most automatic cars in this price segment offer an automated manual transmission (AMT), which is not a very smooth shifter. The Kylaq, on the other hand, comes with a torque converter (TC), which is by far the smoothest gearbox around. The Kylaq's compact dimensions also make it perfect for the city, and it has enough space inside. Fuel efficiency will not be as high as that of a Maruti Suzuki Swift. However, since your running is low, this should not be too much of an issue. You will certainly enjoy the smoother shifting gearbox.

Which engine is best for my use - petrol or diesel - and which model offers the best value for money within a ₹20 lakh budget? Please advise. The Mahindra Thar Roxx petrol makes more sense given your limited running. The 2.0 litre turbo petrol is powerful, smooth and refined. While the diesel is more efficient, it is not as smooth, and you would need significantly higher running costs to recover its higher upfront cost.Since you are not planning hardcore off-roading and your usage will mostly be daily commutes and highway driving, the fact that the petrol is only offered in 4X2 does not really matter. The MX5 fits your requirements well, in both manual and automatic, stays within your budget, and offers features you would expect, such as 19-inch alloys, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a single pane sunroof and a reversing camera.

Asked by: Akki I am looking to buy a good EV and want something a segment above city cars. I had shortlisted the XEV 9e, but considering the ₹2 lakh price difference compared to the 9s, I feel the XEV 9e may not sustain its current pricing and could see a price correction. The December offers are available, but they are not attractive enough for me to close the deal. Should I wait for another 2-3 months, or do you think the current offers are the best and I should go ahead with the purchase? There is no confirmation of a possible price reduction for the Mahindra XEV 9e. In fact, carmakers usually use the new calendar year to bump up prices. If your heart is set on the Mahindra XEV 9e, we'd advise you to make the most of the year-end discounts. Alternatively, you could consider the attractively priced Mahindra XEV 9S that is essentially a 9e in a conventional SUV body style. The two SUVs are one and the same under the skin, and it's only the different suspension tuning (the 9S is set up much softer) that is the point of difference that you'd feel on the move. The 9S also gives added flexibility with a third row of seats.
