Asked by: Divya I plan to sell my current car and purchase a new one through my employer’s car leasing policy. I’m considering the Tata Curvv and really like its overall styling. However, I’m confused between the Curvv EV and the petrol version. I’ve taken a test drive of both. I like the Curvv EV for its silent cabin, but the real-world range of 350–375km is a concern. The Curvv 1.2 Revotron petrol DCT is more affordable than the EV, but the cabin is noisy and fuel efficiency is quite low. Please suggest which one I should go for. The Tata Curvv EV's real-world range of 350–375km on a single charge shouldn’t be a major concern, especially if you have a fixed daily route and access to charging either at home or at your workplace. Charging once or twice a week should comfortably cover your city usage. You can also undertake 200–250km long drives without having to plan a charging stop along the way. Only extended outstation trips would require some planning. If you’re looking for an EV with a longer real-world range, the Hyundai Creta Electric with its 51.4kWh battery is worth considering, as it's expected to offer over 400km.

With average city speeds of around 18kph, the Hyundai Creta 1.5 petrol-CVT and the 1.5 turbo-petrol DCT are likely to deliver an efficiency of approximately 10–11kpl. Under similar conditions, the larger and heavier Mahindra XUV700, equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 6-speed automatic gearbox, is expected to return around 8–9 kmpl. That said, the Hyundai Creta mileage and Mahindra XUV700 mileage will vary depending on traffic conditions, driving style, ambient temperature, and average speed.

Asked by: Anish Hi. My annual mileage is between 12,000 to 14,000 km. About 80% of that is city driving, with a daily run of 45 km. I currently own a 10-year-old Jazz petrol manual. I love the new Creta. I drove a friend's Seltos diesel automatic and loved the grunt and convenience. Now, I'm confused whether to go for the petrol CVT or diesel automatic in the Creta. I'm sceptical about DPF issues in city conditions and unsure about the future of diesel, especially since I plan to keep the car for 10 years. A diesel engine will deliver punchier performance and better fuel efficiency, but you will have to live with a constant diesel clatter in the cabin – it won’t be as refined as petrol. More importantly, as you rightly pointed out, modern diesels need to be driven at highway speeds at least once every fortnight to prevent clogging of the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Given your mostly city-focused usage, the Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol with a CVT (automatic) would be a more suitable option to consider.
